What programmes should I have running on my PC while Im on the internet?

What should I have running in the background for safe internet use to keep my computer free from viruses and stuff, I have a antivirus but my pc keeps slowing down

You should have a firewall too - if you don't have one, you should at the very least switch on Windows Firewall. Go to start%26gt;control panel%26gt;windows firewall and either switch it on or make sure it is on.

Adaware or Spybot (or both)

if you use spybot, make sure you update and immunize.

It might be worthwhile running CCleaner, especially if you're using Internet Explorer - the browser tends to get bloated and slows down.

Pop up blocker and definetely make sure you regularly delete your internet temporary pages and cookies. Scan with Adaware (free download from lavasoft) for spy and malware.. It will keep your pc running quick and smoothly..
Your computer may slow down because of the antivirus software you have. If people were careful enough, there would be no need for spyware/antivirus etc. Your best protection is yourself. Dont download dodgy programs, open unknown attachments, visit warez sites etc. When a new virus gets released, no AV program can detect it. Some AV programs slow down your system so much that usually its better to let it finish its job (scanning for viruses or whatever) and then start using your computer. To me, a program that takes over my computer is a virus in itself. Not to mention that these programs (Norton for example) are not that easy to uninstall either. I am on the computer about 12 hours a day (work mainly) and there are times when I would rather have a virus that throws a pop up window ones in a while than have a AV program that tells me when I can work and when HE (Mr. Norton) can work.
You should have a friewall running too - many of the AV products have one built in or Windows has its own quite adequate one which you can use.
